My grandmother Lily Kwok was a maid for a formidable English family during her time in service in Hong Kong and then eventually in Somerset, England. One of the family members Mr Woodman requested Lily to make him a chilli sauce for his sausage butty (sandwich). Now Lily only spoke pigeon English and reading English was just very hit and miss. So she picked up the sugar instead of the salt as they both had the letter S and scooped in a generous sprinkling of sugar thinking it was salt… the result was Sweet Chilli was born and Mr Woodman loved the taste and Lily just grinned from ear to ear!

Sweet Mandarin’s sauce range has been created to serve our gluten free, nut free, dairy free customers. The range of versatile sauces are all natural maintaining the authentic high quality flavour you are used to tasting. Each sauce is made with love and can be used on a variety of meats, vegetables, noodles, rice and salads for all meal occasions.


1 x Sweet Mandarin Sweet Chilli Sauce

12 Large King Prawns

1 x small broccoli florets

50g potato starch to batter the king prawn

1 beaten egg to coat the king prawns before battering them.


  1. Season the king prawns with a sprinkle of salt
  2. Soak the king prawns in the beaten egg
  3. Place the eggy king prawns in the plate of potato starch
  4. Deep fry for 5-7 minutes till crispy.
  5. Heat 1/4 bottle of Sweet Mandarin Sweet Chilli sauce
  6. Add back in the gluten free king prawns and toss for 1-2 minutes
  7. Serve with blanched broccoli florets and a glass of pino grigio chilled!


An alternative would be mushroom, pepper, carrot and courgette kebabs with the sweet chilli brushed over right as the vegetables are fully cooked. Delish!
